Definition

A stream detached from and not in hydrological contact with the groundwater system below.

Synonyms

Detached Stream

Remote Stream

Description

A stream is disconnected from the groundwater system by an unsaturated zone.  The water table may have a discernible mound below the stream if the rate of recharge through the streambed and unsaturated zone is greater than the rate of lateral groundwater flow away from the water table mound. This is a special case of an influent stream.

Why are disconnected streams important?

While disconnected streams may contribute to the recharge of aquifers, groundwater abstraction in the vicinity of these streams does not affect flow in the stream.
