Definition

An aquifer that owes its water-bearing properties to fracturing.

Description

A fractured aquifer is defined as a formation that  contains sufficient fissures, fractures, cracks, joints and faults that yields economic quantities of water to boreholes and springs.

Why are fractured aquifers important?

Fractured aquifers can contain groundwater due to secondary porosity and can transmit groundwater and contaminants at a high rate.
