Regulations for the Protection and Management of Groundwater
As the custodian of South Africa’s water resource, the Department of Water and Sanitation is mandated is to ensure that the country’s water resources are protected, managed, used, developed and controlled through regulating the delivery of effective water supply and sanitation. All these objectives are managed by the National Water Act of 1998 (NWA of 1998), this Act and related regulations ensures that water resources of our country are sufficiently regulated and monitored for sustainable use of water.
These regulations provide a framework for regulating groundwater abstraction, monitoring and compliance, and safeguarding aquifers to ensure long-term water security, environmental protection, and equitable access for present and future generations.
The proposed Regulations aim to improve data and information management through the registration of geosites for all existing and new groundwater users, and the systematic capturing of borehole drilling, geosites, and geohydrological information and reports.
